Soothing DIY Honey, Aloe, Moringa Face Mask

All three of these ingredients have been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda, and can all be consumed as well. To read more about the ancient uses of these ingredients, you can look to the Charaka Samhita, a foundational text on Ayurveda.

Moringa (sigru) It is said that the Mauryan soldiers who defeated Alexander the Great’s army in India consumed moringa leaves before going into battle. Moringa has been an important source of vitality and health. It contains vitamins A, E, K and C, which are all great for skin health. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has the ability to repair ageing skin. Unlike aloe and honey, it is astringent, so if you do consume it, do so in moderation.

Honey (madhu) is a staple in Ayurveda, and has been used for its healing and immunity strengthening properties. It is great on burns, and is known to be antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and hydrating on the skin. It helps with healthy ageing, scarring, acne and inflammation.

Aloe vera (grihtkumari) is known to benefit the female reproductive system and bring about vitality and youthfulness. It has a calming effect for the inside and outside of our bodies. It is deeply hydrating and soothing and is also great for addressing blemishes and fine lines. I actually consume aloe vera everyday (as per the instruction of my Ayurvedic practitioner).

Recipe

1 tsp honey

1tsp aloe vera juice

1 tsp moringa powder

In a small bowl combine the honey with the aloe vera and stir so that the honey is loosened a bit. Then add the moringa powder to the bowl and continue to stir all three ingredients together until a liquid paste forms. If it is too dry, slowly add a bit more aloe vera juice. If it is too liquid then add more moringa powder. This recipe is for single use.

To use, wash your face, making sure there is no moisturiser, make up or sunscreen on your face. Once clean, apply the face mask (I just use the same spoon that I used to mix the ingredients). Once you have an even layer covering your face, relax for twenty minutes. Maybe in shavasana or supta badha konasana!
